The number of 17 to 20 year olds applying for their first provisional driving licence in the UK has dropped significantly in recent years from 43 percent to just 36 percent. Many are blaming the high costs of driving, but the good news is that in 2014 the price of a provisional licence was reduced from £50 to £36, making it easier for new drivers to get behind the wheel.

Do we really know who’s driving on Britain’s roads? Perhaps not. While the country has a strong licensing system in place, media sources are reporting a huge rise in driving test fraud, meaning that it is likely that there are hundreds of licensed drivers on the roads today who have never passed a formal driving test. There are growing concerns that driver and passenger safety will be significantly compromised if police do not crack down on this type of fraud.

A recent study undertaken by Churchill insurance shows that two thirds of drivers have forgotten about the Highway Code, so much so that they would fail their theory test if they had to take it again!
More and more driving schools in the UK are starting to offer the opportunity to undertake a part of your driving tuition in a driving simulator, and there are also many types of downloadable versions available to use at home, but are they a good idea, or is it more beneficial to be out and about on the road, experiencing ‘real’ driving situations?

According to government statistics, only 46% of people pass the theory test at the first attempt. In other words, more than half do not. That may be a comforting thought if you’ve already had a go at it and failed, but it seems that there are a variety of reasons why the pass rate is so low.
