A man who cheated on his driving test has been sent to prison for six months. He was made an example of in order to act as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to make use of what has been described as an “industry” of frauds who are willing to take the theory exam in their stead.

While the driving theory test has become more thorough in recent years, it is not enough to explain the low numbers of driving test pass rates in recent years. Figures released by the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) show that less than half the people who actually took the test managed to pass in 2016.

An important part of learning to drive, and a requirement for a full UK driving licence, is to pass the UK driving theory test. The theory test is to see how much a potential driver knows and understands about the Highway Code. If you look on the Internet, you will see that there are many quizzes and videos designed to test your knowledge of the Highway Code. It’s worth taking a few of these mock tests as it will give you more understanding of what is required for a pass.

We’ve all heard tales of women who have taken the test a dozen times. Some eventually pass and some don’t. What we don’t hear about quite so much are all the men who also take the test many times, and either give up or succeed in the end. With an emphasis on gender equality, this article looks at how many times it might take a man or a woman to pass their test, or give up on the dream.

When we think of best selling books, we often think of works of fiction that have had a huge cultural effect – things like Harry Potter or Fifty Shades of Grey. When it comes to non-fiction it might be Darwin’s Origin of Species that springs to mind, or maybe The Guinness Book of Records. Not many people would guess that The Highway Code ranks among them.

The driving test is something that will be forever evolving alongside the modern world. This year, we’ve heard of new proposals and plans with which the Department of Transport has been heavily involved. The new plans are being drawn up by the UK Government to give the driving test an overhaul, with a view to help increase the pass rate. As you read this, The Department of Transport is preparing a consultation, which includes a controversial part-denationalisation of the practical driving exam.

The latest statistics from the DVSA show that the pass rate for the theory test in the UK has been steadily declining since this additional element of the driving test was introduced back in 2007. While the pass rate varies considerably by test centre, on average the rate has dropped from 65.4 percent during the 2007-2008 period, to just 51 percent today, meaning more people than ever before are having to retake the test – sometimes multiple times – in order to be eligible to take their practical driving test.
